How to Keep an Eye on Your Competitors

In this economic down-turn, where budgets and margins are tight, it’s vital to capitalize on your offerings and keep an eye out on what the competition is doing. Thanks in large-part to the internet, we have an abundance of tools to utilize in helping us learn more about our competition. Many of these tools are free and very simple to use. Below is a list of our favorite tools. Enjoy!

Competitor websites – For obvious reasons…a no-brainer. Check out your competitor's news, PR sections, product releases, white papers, etc. You’ll be amazed at what you can learn.

Google Alerts – This tool is one of our favs! You don’t even need a Google account to set this up. Within minutes you’ll be able to start tracking most anything Google indexes about your competitors.

Compete.com – This website provides a much more robust report on your competitors. Their reports can provide site and search analytics together. A great way to learn about your competitors' PPC (Pay Per Click) campaign strategies. They have a free and pro version available.

Spyfu.com – This is a cool simple site that provides information about your competitors’ keywords and PPC campaigns. Oh, and it’s free!

Social Networks - Follow your competitors on Facebook, twitter and Linkedin. This is a quick and easy way to see what your competitors are up to. You should also sign up for their enewsletter if they have one.

Hopefully OUR competitors’ won’t be reading this post! However, at the end of day…if you have a great offering and top level service, your competitors shouldn’t be able to compete with you anyways. Right?
